the Department of Psychology A part -time research trainee (5 hours a week) seeks to join a current research project that works with Professor Silke Göbel for 12 months starting from 11/1/2025 on an ESRC project by investigating the foundations of understanding fractures and decimal numbers.

The ability to understand and deal with logical numbers such as fractures and decimal numbers (for example, 1/3, 2.14) is an important basic skill for advanced mathematics and a gate to radical topics. Rational numbers are also common in the workplace, and efficiency with rational numbers is important for decisions related to health and personal financial affairs. Given the positive results related to efficiency with rational numbers, the current low levels of the efficiency of the rational number raises anxiety.

In this project, we use cognitive psychological research to improve efficiency with rational numbers. The project consists of a longitudinal study in high schools and eye tracking experiences with high school children and adults.

The main purpose of this role is to provide support for the research project and help in its daily operation. The postal holder will obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Discipline and Related Experience with Children. The project will include the test in schools, as well as contact with parents and teachers to build communications in society. The post will also include organizing events and enhancing general participation, knowing.

The necessary skills, experience and qualifications

  • To conduct tests in numerical awareness with children in high schools

  • To contact parents, teachers and other external contacts in order to build links with society

  • To enter data and document experiments appropriately and according to best practices and moral requirements

  • To help create experimental materials (such as computerized tasks, test designing test brochures, testing programs, and grades ’papers)

  • To consider the impact of the project and interact with the public with the support of senior colleagues (creating the web site, writing newsletter, social media)

  • To submit regular reports on the progress of projects to senior colleagues

  • To do the appropriate organizational and administrative activities. Examples may include organizing meetings, conferences, workshops, control of budgets and the development of promotional or educational materials.

  • To determine the priorities of the tasks within an agreed schedule to ensure the delivery of the project (the project) on time.
