PhD pressure From Limerick, via ERC

background.
We live in an era that is especially characterized by “cultural wars”, where attitudes are made on important topics (such as climate change,
Vaccination, etc.) is obligated to political identities. These processes have profound effects on issues that require strong collective coordination, such as healthy behavior, environmental policies, and politics. For example, the coordination of positions will be essential for climate change.
The project.
ERC’s identification pressure project explores the idea that polarization based on issues is the compression of information, as positions provide excess information (such as) about groups and identity. This framework shows people who hold positions as a social information system where people are present through their own positions and can determine each other easily in the social system from some of the expressed situations. The more pressure the social information system, the less information is necessary to locate the people inside it. These ideas of social identity and social representations flow in situations (for theoretical background, see Quayle (in the press), Quayle and Durrheim (2025), referred to below. We are especially excited to explore the conversion paths where we assume, people
Preparing to adopt an idea depends on its current position in the social information system. PhD candidates will work as part of this team that tests these ideas through secondary data, social experiences and simulation. We will especially explore whether the information becomes pressureable and how it is transferred when it is passed through simple social networks, whether the pressure of social information for polarization (for example that people pressure social information more in the contexts with a higher polarization), and will test the concept of conversion paths experimentally. We will work with applied mathematicians in our group to develop standards and ways to estimate compression, and draw them to other polarization standards.

The values of our group of kindness and curiosity. We are groups with loose with members of psychology, applied mathematics, statistics, political science, physics, and others. Please take a look at the recent publications to see the type of work we do.
What do we offer?
We offer two of the two doctoral cousins (up to 4 years) to join the ERC identity compression project, one that leads to a doctorate in psychology and the other in mathematics/applied statistics. (The value of the award will be almost identical to the salary of research fellowship in Ireland and local/European Union.) There will be additional funding for research, travel, training and skills development. Note that although we will consider global requests, international fees are not covered.
What kind of applicants we are looking for?
