Today’s article:

We invite requests to obtain the fully funded doctoral students hosted by the University of Birmingham and the source of Diamond Light, the National Singroterron Facility in the United Kingdom. This position is dominated by Ada Lovelace and University of Birmingham.

This multidisciplinary project is ideal for candidates who have a background in physics, material science, chemistry, or mathematical sciences, and a strong interest in applying advanced material and calculating methods of realistic challenges in energy and environmental technologies.

The research will focus on the nano structure of the materials with layers-such as Peruvakite, graphics, and double-layer hydroxides, clay minerals-which are necessary for applications in energy storage, motivation, and environmental therapy. These materials show complex two-dimensional structures that control their performance with hidden changes in the stacking of the layer and nanotechnology-trims that are difficult to solve with the currently available analysis methods.

Experience will be acquired in combining experimental total scattering and high -resolution imaging with artificial intelligence tools and atomic simulation tools to overcome the current restrictions in the description of nanoparticles. This multidisciplinary approach will allow you to investigate both local atomic environments and long -term structural features, such as serials and defects, with unprecedented details. Through this work, it will reveal the basic links between the conditions of synthesis, microscopic structure, and the sample properties of layers with layers. Your research will contribute to the discovery and improvement of the following generation materials, with the flexibility of focusing on applications such as advanced battery cathodes, collecting nuclear waste, or even physical chemical environments that you think support the origin of life.

This project provides a unique opportunity to work on the interface of experimental physics, data science and material modeling, with the aim of revealing the basic relationships of the actor that govern material performance.

50 % will be based at the University of Birmingham in the Sustainability Group (DR PhOEBE ALAN) and 50 % in Diamond Light Source (Dr Alberto Leonardi), and acquires practical experience with Synchrotron devices with a global level and mathematical infrastructure.

The main features of the course:

  • Advanced advanced physics training, analysis of data driven by artificial intelligence, atomic modeling
  • Opportunities to provide international conferences and cooperation with industry
  • Development of convertible skills in scientific computing, writing and communication
  • Optional teaching and awareness experience

The University of Birmingham was founded in 1900 on the spirit of anti -discrimination equally accepted. The Chemistry School is located in the modern molecular science building that opened in 2024 and is home to a vibrant society from groups looking to develop battery materials and recycling, chemistry, and chemistry for sustainability on a wider scale.

Candidates must have or expect to obtain the first or higher degree of honor (2.1) (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, material science, computer science, or other relevant discipline. These workers come for 42 months with a budget for training and attendance of conferences as well as to travel between Birmingham and the source of diamond light.

Applications must be submitted through the university’s application system. Please contact Dr. Vibi Alan or Dr. Alberto Leonardi before applying, and to provide a CV and a summary of research interests. More information can be obtained by sending an email to Dr. Vibi Alan (P.allan@bham.ac.uk) Or Dr. Alberto Leonardi (alberto.leonardi@diamond.ac.uk).

Funding details

Funding is only available for students residing in the UK. Requests will start on July 10 and continue until the position is filled.
