— the latest insights
In this post:
The civil labor market is narrow. With all your military experience and skills listed in your CV, it may not be sufficient to secure a meaningful position in the private sector. You are competing against the candidates who did not take time to serve in the army but provide deep experience in their selected career – and may bring wide networks of useful communications as well as advanced grades and certificates.
Is it time to raise the saying or get more education?
As I wrote in my book, “Success after service”:
The decision to return to school after military service is not an easy option for some. You know that you will postpone the days of income, and you will be older than the most traditional university student, and you may need to adjust your lifestyle to live in Ji Bell Salaries. But the opportunities, the possibility of your life and your professional life acquired through the experience of the kidney or high schools are Asi, and for many of you this will be the best option. “
Read after that: Do you have to look for a job while still working?
I recently spoken to “Jim”, a transitional pilot, who realized that his career in project management after leaving Air Force His lack of a Bachelor’s degree will hinder him. His military career – by all standards – was impressive, but his lack of a university degree stopped him at the door from many of the required employers.
Today, some Companies Disclosure the requirements of the college certificate while most of them admit to maintaining the requirements. Some of them require more education and advanced grades. While evaluating whether you want to continue after military education (university grades or graduate or specialized studies), keep in mind:
1. Is the necessary condition for the specific work you want to do?
Yes, some fields require training and additional education. Doctors, accountants, psychologists, biochemistry and astronomers need a specialized education to perform their work, to name a few. But if this is a preference, instead of the actual condition, consider costs against the benefits of additional education.
2. Is an additional teaching something you think you need?
To be an executive coach, for example, it may be useful to get training and license, but this is not required. The certificate will not give you legitimacy if you lack the other qualities necessary to successfully perform this work.
3. Can you bear education financially now?
With the money you can access, ask yourself: Can you support yourself and your family while following up full -time education?
4. Will you be able to work while you are in school?
If you have a family and you need to be in a part -time school, can you physically get a job to help support your lifestyle and needs? This will be a good conversation with your support system.
5. Can you see how additional acquired education will speed up your career in the future?
Short -term concessions and lifestyles can be made for the oldest PushingOutside the road if your career can grow faster and more profitable with the advanced degree.
If you decide that the time is right to have an additional education, know that you will enter a new chapter in your career. You will learn a lot in the semester as you do from those around you and you will use this learning to grow personally and professionally.
