This week, the Australian government has released two main climate -related pieces: First, a report showing the climatic effects that Australia will face; A few days later, the work plan and the goal to reduce emissions by 2035.

By reading by assessing the long -awaited national climate risk this week, which plans to how different degrees of global heating on our economy, societies, agriculture, health, infrastructure and ecosystems, I could only imagine how one of Australia will live through what will come: my four -year -old son.

The Climate Risk Assessment Report determines the current climate risk facing Australians, and what can happen in 1.5, 2 and 3 degrees Celsius of warming in 2050 and 2090.

By 2050, when the worsening disasters are assigned to expose more people, it is expected that the intense heat will rise, our health systems will be struggled to overcome, and my son will be 30 years old. In those years of early adulthood – when life around discovery and hunting of dreams should be cloudy instead of anxiety, scarcity and stability.

By 2090, when natural disasters that can overwhelm emergency services overlap, my son will approach 70 years.

Through 284 horrific pages, the report is incredibly difficult to swallow, especially as a parent.

But in the midst of anxiety, the nucleus of hope is the fact that there is a big difference between Australia, where we successfully restrict the warming to 1.5, and one we allow it to climb to 3 degrees Celsius.

The worst effects are still avoided. Reducing warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius means less than deadly heat days, less than marine heat waves, and perhaps an opportunity to fight coral ecosystems such as Great Barrier Reef. This means a future that we can still adapt to.

However, a few days later, the dairy government released a target to reduce emissions from 62 to 70 % by 2035, which is not anywhere to keep our children safe. It was not responded to the flag that Safar says by 2035 is what corresponds to 1.5 ° C, and that anything less than 75 % is consistent with much higher than 2 ° C – a more hot and more cruel future.

I am angry at the betrayal of future generations, but more than ever to make sure that we leave this goal and federal failure in the climate in dust. There are hundreds of governments without patriotism, business and institutions that are still in line with the Paris Agreement, and we can work with them to reduce the use of fossil fuels and emissions as quickly as possible.

The government’s goal is not to have our ambition-it is just the ground in which we collect and build climate solutions on a large scale and the speed needed to reduce warming at 1.5 ° C-which is still a completely negotiable goal.

One of the main sources of hope is my local parents in the West for Climate Group, which meets monthly to the concrete climate solutions that we can pay in our society – with the additional benefit of communicating with other parents who share me in the climate crisis, and motivate to act.

Every ton of avoiding emissions issues. Each degree of avoiding warming issues. For this reason, for my son and for every child, I refuse to surrender to despair and instead I am concerned about work. From pressure on deputies to volunteer to donation, there are countless methods that we can meet and continue to build a peaceful and prosperous future for our children.

I may not be present to take care of my son in those next decades. But while I am here, I will do everything I can to protect his future – and the future of all children.
