Berkeley Laboratory is looking for an experienced and strategic leader to be the following Head of the Department of Utilities Engineering. You will lead a team of talented engineering professionals responsible for providing auxiliary tools and secure infrastructure, which is costly and effective that support leading scientific research. The head of the department leads multiple engineering programs-including factories and projects engineering, reliability engineering, and design management-playing a major role in long-term infrastructure planning, daily operational support, and resource alignment with important priorities.

We are looking for a licensed professional engineer (or architect) with strong leadership experience in multidisciplinary engineering organizations with a passion for continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will bring an approach directed towards clients in engineering leadership, as well as deep knowledge of organizational compliance, infrastructure systems and performance standards. This position is reports to the Director of the Facilities Department.

What will you do:

  • Providing strategic and operational leadership to a diverse engineering team responsible for planning, designing and providing infrastructure solutions that support scientific programs and institutional operations.
  • Ensuring safe, reliable and effective delivery for the site’s facilities and infrastructure in accordance with the priorities of the task and organizational requirements .. Developing long -term strategies to update facilities, renewing infrastructure, and managing the assets of the life cycle.
  • Supervising the planning and implementation of engineering resources to ensure safe and timely support in terms of cost for capital projects, maintenance operations and scientific work requests.
  • Building strong business relationships with internal stakeholders, scientific departments, and project management teams to provide coordinated engineering support
  • Cooperation closely with the project management and the scientific leadership to improve multi -functional planning, simplify delivery, and ensure the implementation of the quality of complex infrastructure projects
  • Update engineering standards, technical specifications and QA/QCL operations to enable the implementation of the safe, consistent and expected project. Ensure that the engineering products are compatible with the orders of the Ministry of Energy and the standards in force.
  • Pay performance through standards, stakeholders ’inputs, and improve the process.
  • Principles of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) in all engineering activities

What is required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • A licensed professional engineer (PE) or architect, registered in California.
  • The minimum is 10 years of gradual experience in engineering design and its management, preferably in scientific settings, research or funded by the federal government.
