I often hear that people say that one of the elderly advantages is that you stop taking care of what others think of you.

How old should I be to reach this point?

Certainly, there are some areas where this is true: I do not care about what people think about what I wear. I do not care about what people think about my political opinions. I no longer care about myself about what people would think about when I told them that I am retired.

But I still feel very tense when I play the piano in front of people. This is because I really care about what people think.

If I stumbled and I cannot remember the rest of the song, do they think, “Wow, I have played six years ago and cannot even finish a song?” When I sing, they think, “This is bad like American Idol’s prior tours?” This is just an informal performance in my living room. I will not let friends come to parties!

My uncle Jim used to tell me not to worry about these things because “they cannot do what she is doing.” (Although he used a more colored language to clarify his point of view.)

Even without real people I know in the audience, the nerves are not better. Because in injustice, where many small jazz combinations play a few tones for each of them, other piano players can do what I do. And much better than I can do. I care about what they think.

The funny thing is that I have many friends now who play musical instruments, and I never think any of these things that I am concerned about thinking about.

My friends, Kim and Jeff, learn to play the guitar. I am always happy to hear Kim sings with her game – it’s beautiful! Jeff finally played for us recently. He says he hates playing in front of people because his hands do not move easily as he practices himself. Yes, I know how this! He apologizes when he makes a mistake – while I didn’t really notice that there is a mistake. Even if you do, I see it not a big problem. It is really fun to see his progress and I am very proud of them to take this.

So it may not be the issue of trying not to worry about what people think, but being more generous about what they might think about. People may actually think nice and supportive ideas like I think when my friends play.
