All you need is a few friends and a little time.

  1. Select a group of three participants, one of whom will be interviewed by others.
  2. Ask everyone to watch jobs to perform an overview video before they meet. One suggestion is “Bob Moysta and Chris Speak – Detect jobs to be performed“From the Software Business Conference.
  3. Ask the person who has been interviewed to choose a purchase, they performed these criteria: purchase one element of more than $ 100 in the past ninety days.
  4. Get together with distance or personally if you can do it safely.
  5. Discuss the video overview.
  6. Then, two members of the third opposite group. Customize 30 minutes, enough time to give everyone a feeling of experience. But go longer if you want it. JTBD interviews have a structure but not a text. Treat the interview as a conversation. The interviews want to reveal the story of how the person who was interviewed a conflict in their lives and began to lead them to achieve (or their failure to make) the progress they want with the help of the product they bought. Be curious. Ask the interview to clarify the mysterious data. Entering the details, like a good investigator, gathered how one event led to another. These are examples of questions that interviews may ask during a conversation (again, not a text that must be followed):
  • When did you notice at the beginning (the product)?
  • What was going on with you? Did you use a different product after that? How was that?
  • Was this the first time you thought (your basic conflicts)? When was that if not?
  • How did you discover what to do after that? after that?
  • Later, what made you say, “Today is the day that I will buy (the product)?”
  • What are alternatives (for example, action process) that you thought all the way? What is the other product?
  • What will change in your life now after you bought (the product)?
  • Do you really use the new product? How is that so far?

After completing the interview, discuss it. What was the situation in which they were seen when they noticed the product? What were they struggling? How did they decide to buy the product? What progress they were trying to make when they bought the product? What is competing with this product to help them make progress they want in their lives?

Can you tell a colorful, complete and ending story? What did you know that this was surprising?!

The big idea behind this interview approach is that the interview based on stories that focus on a specific previous experience will provide you with more healthy and reliable data than, for example, to ask people about what they want or might do. We humans are not good in extracting reliable conclusions about our behavior without context. We are not good at predicting our future behavior as well. We are vulnerable, when asked to do this, share our perfect behavior. Or we may only guess.

We need to understand the actual behavior of people to build successful new products and services. By following an ethnographic approach to the story about something specific in the past, we can help people facilitate what actually happened-when the events occurred, their place, what they did, and why.
